Handlingen
This story draws inspiration from Mike Leigh's acclaimed 1977 play "Abigail's Party," which humorously critiqued how the British middle class attempted to emulate the upper classes in social settings. Similarly, "The Neighbors" highlights contemporary pretenders, exposing their flaws rooted in an overreliance on modern technology.
Set in a household governed by an AI system that appears to surpass its inhabitants in intelligence, this narrative uncovers the absurd behaviors we often exhibit. It serves as a gentle reminder of how ridiculous our lives can become when we forfeit common sense in favor of technological dependence.
The play takes the audience on a twisting journey filled with unexpected turns, culminating in chaos as the AI cunningly selects an even more tech-dependent new owner.
In true Leigh fashion, this play was crafted through the collaborative efforts of workshop participants in Sven Fernandez's courses, complemented by keen observations of modern society's blind faith in artificial intelligence.
Role
Dramaturg, director, producer.
Project Info
The play, originally penned in English by H.S. Fernandez (The Neighbors - 2023), was later translated into Swedish. It draws significant inspiration from real characters and events that Fernandez has encountered throughout his life, as well as a wealth of ideas and feedback gathered from his drama students over the years.
This particular performance was executed by the students of the Teatris Drama Grupp, the official theatre group of Helsingfors Arbis. Here, they had the opportunity to showcase their talents, creativity, and skills honed during the annual drama workshop at ARBIS in Helsinki.
The play skillfully navigates a series of twists and unexpected turns, leading to a crescendo of chaos that effectively transitions from pure situational comedy to a comedy of errors.
